Cedarwood Perfume: How to Find the Cedar Fragrance That Suits You

Cedarwood perfume ranges from crisp and dry to warm, sweet or smoky, depending on the type of cedar and the notes around it. Cedar is one of the most widely used woods in perfumery, valued for the structure it gives a composition. To find the right one, decide which character you enjoy then compare how each fragrance develops on your skin over several hours.
What Cedarwood Smells Like in Perfume
Cedar smells dry and clean, often compared to freshly sharpened pencils or the inside of a wooden chest. Perfumers rarely use it alone. Instead, it gives a fragrance a backbone: bright top notes rest on it, and it carries them gracefully into the dry-down, the scent that remains on your skin after the opening fades.
Not all cedar smells the same. The two varieties you will see most often on fragrance notes are quite different:
Virginia cedar: Dry, sharp and woody, with that classic pencil-shaving quality. Despite the name, it comes from a juniper tree native to North America.
Atlas cedar: Harvested in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, it is warmer, softer and slightly sweet, with a balsamic depth.
Perfumers also use modern materials that extend the character of cedar. Essential Parfums, for example, describes Georgywood as a new variation on cedarwood. For background on the different cedar oils, see Wikipedia.
Three Styles of Cedarwood Perfume
The notes surrounding cedar determine its personality. Most cedarwood fragrances fall into one of three broad styles.
Fresh and Aromatic Cedar
Fresh cedar fragrances feel clean and easy to wear, which makes them excellent everyday choices. The Matiere Premiere Parisian Musc opens with Virginia cedar over ambrette seed and fig leaf, settling into soft musks that stay close to the skin. The Essential Parfums Bois Impérial combines Thai basil and Nepalese timut pepper with Haitian vetiver and Georgywood for a green, energetic woodiness.
For a coastal interpretation, Mancera Cinque Terre layers rosemary, lemon and cardamom over a heart of cedar, pine, fig leaves and sea salt.

Warm Cedar With Spice and Sweetness
When cedar meets spices, iris or dried fruit, it becomes richer and more enveloping. Nicolaï Crème Ébène Intense places dates at the heart alongside both Atlas and Virginian cedar, framed by saffron and cardamom above and sandalwood, vanilla and white musk below.
In Christian Provenzano Spezia, orris butter, jasmine, clove and nutmeg rest on Virginian cedarwood, patchouli and vetiver. Floraïku Boyish takes a more mineral direction, pairing orris and olibanum with Atlas cedar, patchouli and vetiver.
Smoky and Leathery Cedar
Darker compositions use cedar to support leather, smoke and resins. The Maison Crivelli Cuir Infrarouge Extrait contrasts a raspberry accord with Virginia and Atlas cedarwood, leather and suede, finished with Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean.
Meo Fusciuni Notturno was, in the perfumer's words, born during the night. It combines leather, cedar leaves and birch leaves with tobacco, amber, vanilla and benzoin, making it a natural companion for cool evenings.

How to Choose and Test a Cedarwood Perfume
Start with the style that attracts you, then think about concentration. At La Parfumerie, we carry Eau de Parfum, Parfum and Extrait de Parfum. A higher concentration is usually stronger and lasts longer, although skin and weather influence how any fragrance wears. The Bois Impérial Extrait, for instance, contains twice the concentration of the Eau de Parfum.
Cedar reveals its true character in the dry-down, so a paper blotter tells you very little. Wear the fragrance on your skin for several hours, ideally on more than one day. We prepare our own 2 ml samples and 5 ml decants of many fragrances, which makes it easy to compare two or three cedar styles at home before choosing a full bottle.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cedarwood Perfume
What does cedarwood smell like in perfume?
Cedarwood smells dry, clean and woody, often compared to pencil shavings. Depending on the variety and the notes around it, it can also feel warm and sweet or dark and smoky.
What is the difference between Virginia cedar and Atlas cedar?
Virginia cedar, which botanically comes from a juniper, is dry and sharp. Atlas cedar from Morocco is warmer and slightly sweet, with more balsamic depth. Some fragrances, such as Cuir Infrarouge Extrait and Crème Ébène Intense, use both.
Is cedarwood perfume for men or women?
Cedar is not tied to gender. It appears in fresh musks, florals and leathers alike, so choose by style rather than by label.
What notes pair well with cedarwood?
Cedar pairs naturally with vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli, and with brighter partners such as citrus, basil and pepper. For darker blends, look for leather, tobacco, incense and vanilla.
